How long should an outplacement program last?
How long searches really take, what providers offer at each level, what ends a program, and what to put in the contract.

How long should an outplacement program last?
Long enough to cover a typical search at the level, plus the long tail. The median job search lasted 11.5 weeks in September 2026, but 27.1% of unemployed people had been looking for six months or more (BLS). Providers' standard programs run about 3 months for hourly staff and individual contributors, 3 to 6 months for managers, and 6 to 12 months for directors and executives. Whatever the length, write down what ends the program: a date, hours used, or placement.
How long do job searches take?
The median is short and the average is long, because a minority of searches run for many months. Plan for the tail, not the median.
| Measure | Value | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Median duration | 11.5 weeks | September 2026 |
| Mean duration | 24.8 weeks | September 2026 |
| Unemployed 27 weeks or more | 27.1% | September 2026 |
| Unemployed 52 weeks or more | 13.8% | 2025 average |
| Median, ages 45 to 54 | 11.8 weeks (mean 27.0) | 2025 average |
| Median, ages 55 to 64 | 11.3 weeks (mean 26.7) | 2025 average |
| Median, management, business and financial | 11.4 weeks (mean 24.1) | 2025 average |
| Median, production occupations | 8.7 weeks | 2025 average |
Sources: BLS Employment Situation Table A-12 (seasonally adjusted) and CPS Table 31 and Table 32. The 2025 averages cover 11 months; October 2025 wasn't collected.
The picture for people who lost long-held jobs is similar: of workers displaced in 2023 to 2025 after three or more years in the job, 66.1% were working again by January 2026, and the rate fell to 57.3% at ages 55 to 64 (BLS Displaced Workers Survey). For senior roles, ExecuNet tells its members that searches at the VP level and above typically take six to twelve months (ExecuNet).
What length fits each level?
Match the program to the search, not the title's prestige: three months is enough for many hourly searches, but too short for a quarter of all searches and most executive ones.
| Level | Typical standard program | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly and entry level | 3 months | A fast first step (resume in week one) and a clear extension path; median searches in production and construction run about 8 to 9 weeks. |
| Individual contributors | 3 months | Extension for anyone still active at the end; 27% of searches pass six months. |
| Managers | 3 to 6 months | Six months covers the mean search length for management, business and financial occupations (24 weeks in 2025). |
| Directors and executives | 6 to 12 months | Until placement, or 12 months; executive networks report six to twelve months at VP level and above. |
“Typical” is the pattern in providers' published programs (below). No independent survey of program length is current; the last one we found, i4cp's from 2009, had managers and individual contributors most often getting up to three months, executives up to a year, and 35.4% of companies offering non-exempt staff nothing (i4cp).
What do outplacement providers offer?
| Provider | Program lengths |
|---|---|
| LHH (US) | Hourly and non-exempt: 3 or 6 months. Professionals and managers: 3, 6 or 9 months. |
| INTOO (US) | Hourly, individual contributors, managers and directors: 3 months. Executives: 6 months. Until-landing on a custom quote. |
| Randstad RiseSmart (Express) | Entry level and individual contributors: 3 months. Managers: 6 months. Directors and above: 12 months. |
| Careerminds | A range of lengths; some programs last until landing. |
| VelvetJobs | Platform access until the person finds a new job; no month counts published. |
On FirstSourceTeam's Extended and Enterprise programs, coaching continues until placement.
What ends an outplacement program?
A calendar date, a number of coaching hours, placement, or a participant who never starts. The definition matters more than the headline length.
Put these in the contract:
- What ends the program: a date, hours used, placement, or no activation within a set window.
- How placement is defined: any job, or a comparable role; who confirms it.
- What happens if a participant takes a short-term or contract role and returns to the search.
- Whether unused time can be extended, and how an extension is approved.
- When the clock starts: notification day, the invitation, or the first session.
- What support continues after the coaching period: platform, job leads, group sessions.
For the other terms to settle before signing, see outplacement contract terms and engagement rates; a program only helps the people who start it.
Questions HR leaders ask
How long does a job search take after a layoff?
The median unemployment spell was 11.5 weeks in September 2026 and the mean 24.8 weeks, so a minority search much longer. In 2025, 23.2% of unemployed people had looked for 27 weeks or more and 13.8% for a year or more. Among workers who lost long-held jobs in 2023 to 2025, 66.1% were working again by January 2026 (BLS).
How long does an executive job search take?
Longer than average. ExecuNet, an executive network, tells members that searches at the VP level and above typically take six to twelve months. BLS doesn't publish executive search length; for the broad management, business and financial group, the 2025 median spell was 11.4 weeks and the mean 24.1 weeks.
What ends an outplacement program?
One of four things, depending on the contract: a calendar date, a number of coaching hours used, the participant accepting a new role, or the participant not starting within an activation window. Ask each provider which applies, how placement is defined, and what happens if someone takes a short-term job and is back in the market.
Support that lasts as long as the search.
