Outplacement for financial services layoffs

Displaced finance workers had one of the weakest reemployment rates in the latest BLS survey: 30.9% were still unemployed. Where banking skills transfer, and the registration and garden-leave issues a financial services reduction in force raises.

What should outplacement for a bank or financial services layoff include?

A longer program than average and a search beyond banking. In the BLS January 2026 survey, 30.9% of long-tenured displaced finance workers were still unemployed, against 18.3% across all industries. Branch and back-office roles are shrinking: BLS projects teller jobs to fall 13% by 2035. Strategy, operations and technology staff transfer well to consulting, corporate finance and tech. Registered representatives also need a plan for their FINRA registration before it lapses.

What financial services layoffs look like now

  • Financial companies announced 23,762 cuts in January to September 2026, down 49% from 46,386 a year earlier; 50,820 in 2025. Insurers announced 7,777 and fintech companies 7,806, up from 1,813. (Challenger, Gray & Christmas)
  • Finance and insurance employment fell from 6.74 million in September 2025 to 6.64 million in September 2026 (preliminary), down 1.4%. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • Layoffs and discharges in finance and insurance were 41,000 in August 2026 (preliminary), a 0.6% rate, half the private-sector rate: fewer layoffs, but longer searches. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Announced cuts are employers' plans, not completed layoffs. Payroll and turnover figures for the latest months are preliminary and get revised.

Where financial services skills transfer

  • Management analysts. 1.1 million jobs. Professional and technical services employs 33%, government 18% and finance and insurance 13%. Projected growth 10% over 2025 to 2035: a common move for bank strategy and operations staff. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • Financial technologists. Finance and insurance employs 11% of software developers and 13% of QA testers, so technology staff can move between banking and tech in both directions. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)
  • Tellers. 339,200 jobs, projected to fall 13% over 2025 to 2035 as customers move to digital banking. Branch staff need a path out of the role, not into the same role elsewhere. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)

What makes a financial services reduction in force different

Registration lapses

When a registered person leaves, the firm files Form U5 within 30 days, and FINRA qualifications lapse after two years without registration unless the person joins FINRA's program for maintaining them. The U5 termination language is part of the exit and worth settling early. (FINRA)

Garden leave and non-competes

Banks and asset managers often use notice periods and garden leave. Minnesota voids non-competes in employment agreements (Minn. Stat. 181.988); other states differ. Settle what applies before the search starts. (Minnesota Office of the Revisor of Statutes)

Searches run long

With roughly 3 in 10 displaced finance workers still unemployed at the survey date, size the program for a long search rather than the average. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)

How we run outplacement for financial services

  • Coaching sized for a longer search, with support continuing until placement.
  • Target lists across consulting, corporate finance, fintech and government, not only banks.
  • Reskilling paths for branch and operations staff whose roles are shrinking.
  • Programs running within 48 hours, coaching across the US, and live reporting for HR.

For the reduction itself, see planning a reduction in force, the WARN notice check and the total cost calculator. For how long support should run, see program length by level. For choosing a provider, see the questions to ask every provider.
